About

The May Geslins are a duo who perform a mix of traditional and self-composed folk songs interspersed with historical narrative and stories.

This allows for a relaxed, enjoyable and informative event. Often our shows are often sold out to folk eager to learn more about the social history of their area.

The duo consists of Kath Jordan (vocals) and Chris Jordan (MA in music, multi-instrumentalist and vocals). Stylistically we perform anything from Anglo-Saxon songs accompanied on the Anglo-Saxon Lyre through to Americana accompanied on folk guitar and acapella folk songs and sea shanties.

Over the past five or six years we have performed many shows ranging from Keep Your Gansey Dry, a mix of History and Sea Shanties through to Sayers Creek, a 1,000 year history of England and its folk music. Along the way we have performed many smaller shows encompassing the social history of a particular town or village – all spiced with a little humour.

For the past few years we have been working in collaboration with Hull Community Theatre producing historically theme ‘folk-operas’. In recent years we have been involved in the productions of Riding the Stang, Cowd Stringy Pie, and, The Great Granson’s and Daughters of the Old Temperance Revival.

In 2024 we performed Time and Tide which featured local maritime stories, history and songs to large critical acclaim at various venue throughout the East Riding.

Earlier this year we performed at the 800th anniversary of the opening of St Mary’s church in Hook, near Goole.

This year we are again working with Hull Community Theatre and will be staging Sweets, Suffrage and Civil Unrest at various locations throughout September.

We are also working with Tony Porter of Hedon museum on these projects which will be tied into the UK’s Heritage Week in September.
