Part 2

Finally, two and a half years after the scheduled performance which was cancelled owing to the Covid 19 pandemic, Riding the Stang will take place!

Saturday 3rd September 2022 at 2pm will see the initial performance of the ‘folk opera’ Riding the Stang.

The ‘free’ to attend event will be the final leg of the Folk in Hull on Tour programme which has been sponsored by Tesco Bags of Help and Groundwork.

The May Geslins have been working with Hull Community Theatre and they have turned the original show into a folk opera.

The show is based loosely around the history of Hedon with a mix of narrative and scenes acted out all linked together with folk music. The history is told with a good deal of humour and the stories come from old history books and archive news reports. Audience participation is encouraged and the show utilises the full extent of the church!

The show is in aid of St Augustines Church, Hedon and is to take place in the church at 2pm on Saturday 3rd September. Refreshments will be available and donations to the church encouraged. No need to book a ticket. All that we ask is that you turn up and enjoy!

Illustration of riding the stang from The Costume of Yorkshire (1814) by George Walker (1781-1856).

”With a ran dan dan, at sign of awd tin can,

As much ageean his ease does – ride stang,

He walloped her, he banged her, he banged her indeed,

He banged her, although she nivver stood i need.”
